The tripod
The tripod is the single most bulky piece of gear, and often the
heavier as well. Hence the temptation to leave it at home. Yuval
prefers the Feisol
CT-3301 over the Manfrotto 190PRO, because in the same
price cateogry it offers similar stability for less traveling weight.
Weight
For traveling, the lighter the better. For taking pictures, the
heavier the better. Both tripods have a hook under the middle column.
Hang a stone in a plastic bag there for added stability. Dispose
of the stone before continuing the journey.
The Feisol is made of carbon fiber and is much lighter than the
alluminium Manfrotto. Isn't this comparison unfair? not on price!
The Manfrotto 055MF3 MagFiber is as light as the Feisol, but much
more expensive!
Rigidity
Both tripods are very stable and are roughly the same size when
folded. The Feisol extend slightly higher than the Manfrotto. They
are both three section tripods.
Head Mount
Both tripods feature a standard 3/8" thread to mount a head.
The Manfrotto has a better finishing, with three little screws to
block the head in position.
Legs
The Manfrotto is slightly more sophisticated. It offers four leg
angle settings while the Feisol offers just the two extremes. The
Manfrotto allows for the center column to be converted into a lateral
arm. The bubble level on the Manfrotto is nice but not very useful.
The Manfrotto is faster to set up and break down thanks to the
quick-release hinged latches. The Feisol's screw-type leg locks
can support more weight.
Both tripods come with simple plastic feet. It is possible to buy
specialized feet such as spikes for the Manfrotto. Nothing like
that is offered by Feisol.
