Subject: VR pictures of Wal Mart store

Dear Mr. Groh

I contact you in this matter as I believe it is a public relationship
opportunity for your company.

I kindly ask permission to take VR (virtual reality) panoramic
photographs (spanning 360 degrees) of the interior of a Wal-Mart store
to be published March 20 in the context of an educational effort, the
World Wide Panorama project.

The World Wide Panorama, sponsored by the Geography Computing Facility,
University of California Berkeley, is an award-winning collaborative
non-profit effort of 200 photographers from 38 countries, each
contributing one VR (virtual reality) panorama. These remarkable
computer images allow a 360 degree view, letting you look in any
direction, including straight up and down.

The goals of the project are the promotion of virtual reality (VR) and
the publication of images useful within the context of geography
teaching.

The World Wide Panorama has been awarded the Yahoo! Search (UK &
Ireland) Find of the Year 2004, in the Travel Category.

Four times a years photographers are assigned a theme allowing for many
interpretations. Each photographer produces and contributes one VR
panorama showing her own local interpretation and perspective on the
theme.

The theme for the next event, scheduled for March 17 to 20, is
"Markets".

The market for consumer goods and services is one of the largest in the
world and one that concern almost every individual on Earth. Wal-Mart is
the largest player in this market. Thanks to Wal-mart, millions of
customers get the opportunity to participate in that market every day
and extract better value for their money. I believe Wal Mart deserves to
be featured in the project.

Past themes where "Sanctuary", "Bridges" "World Heritage" and "The
Original WWP". You can see my personal contribution to the "Sanctuary"
event at http://geoimages.berkeley.edu/wwp1204/html/YuvalLevy.html

All continents (except Antarctica) are represented, and 27 American
states. Participants include professional photographers, artists,
computer experts, senior citizens and students. Biographies of many of
the participants are on the site.

I am a passionate photographer who likes to push himself to the limits.
After underwater photography I saw VR photography as my next challenge
and I started taking full spherical panoramas last year when I moved to
Canada, following my Canadian wife's academic career. I was born in
Israel and raised in Switzerland. After university and business school I
worked as an analyst for Credit Suisse, the second largest bank of
Switzerland. Since 2000 I make a living as an independent consultant.

Visit the World Wide Panorama at "http://www.worldwidepanorama.com/".
The four previous events are on line, an amazing archive of over 800 VR
panoramas spanning the globe.

All images are copyright by the original photographers. I will
accomodate Wal-Mart's needs in terms of copyright and transfer copyright
ownership to Wal-Mart at no cost and with no string attached.

A caption is published next to the image. It is an occasion to expand on
the theme its interpretation. My wish as an MBA is to expand on the
strategic market forces according to professor Michael Porter of
Hardvard Business School, but I will accomodate any request of yours.
The text will be submitted for your approval prior to publication.

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for considering my request.

Shooting can take place any time between March 17 and March 20 whenever convenient to your store manager.

My favorite store would be #3146 (Sainte-Foy).

Kind Regards,
Yuv

Subject: 17 March photo shooting request

Hi Kevin,

Any news about my request for permission to take pictures at a Wal*Mart store March 17 to March 20? We are a week away from the WWP equinox event (http://geoimages.berkeley.edu/wwp/NextEvent.html).

Delivery of new, professional equipment that I hope to use to produce my WWP contribution is scheduled for Monday. I expect it to deliver much better panoramic photographs than anything I have previously done and I look forward to feature Wal*Mart on the WWP.

Kind Regards

Good morning Kevin,

I was unable so far to get in contact with Andrew through the phone
number you gave me last week. What should I do?

I strongly feel that no collection of markets would be complete without
the world largest retailer. It would be sad to miss this opportunity.
There will be plenty of contributions from all over the world.

My brand new equipment arrived today and I am familiarizing with it.

kind regards
Yuval

Hi Yuval -- Andrew's not available today, so I checked with whomever I
could about your request. Unfortunately, I've found out that we have a
fairly inflexible policy against photography in our stores and I'm going
to have to reject your request.

I'm very sorry for the delay in getting a response back to you, and I
hope you'll be able to find an equally compelling location for your
shot.

Kevin

Hi Kevin -- I understand you are bound by a policy that you can not influence. I am a bit surprised that Wal*Mart let such an opportunity slip. Other photographers in our community have been more lucky than me and there will be a number of stores that will get a boost of free pubblicity from this. I might have been a bit too ambitious, hoping for the big fish. I made contingency planning, so no worries, I have an alternate subject. Watch http://www.worldwidepanorama.com/ on April 1...
